The Tilton School Peer Mentoring Club took a trip to the Calvary Cemetery in Utica today and had the privilege to place American flags on several veterans’ graves. Jim George, Commander at American Legion Post 229 and US Army Veteran, escorted the children to the cemetery and directed them to gravesites of veterans. While the children placed flags, Jim spoke about the importance of remembering our veterans on Memorial Day and respecting them throughout the year.

Assistant Principal, Sarah Roselli, along with three school social workers, our speech therapist, and a teacher assistant chaperoned the trip. Mrs. Roselli said to the group, “Veterans risked their lives, fought wars, and sometimes died for the freedoms we enjoy today. How does that impact each of you? Today you have the freedom to play video games, engage in sports, drive a car, dance at the prom. You may not even realize these things come at a price that someone else paid for you. Veterans have served all of us, and this weekend, we honor those who died while serving. Thank you to all veterans on this Memorial Day.”

Our Peer Mentoring Club learned a lot today and will share their knowledge with their classmates, friends, and families. Thank you to American Legion Post 229, for allowing The House of the Good Shepherd to be part of today.
