"Socks are the #1 item needed in shelters..."

Makayla Chambers, a high school student, wanted to give back to her community by providing one of the most needed and crucial articles of clothing...socks! She visited our Foster care Building at 17 Herkimer Road to drop off different kinds of socks for all shapes and sizes of kids in our care. Below you will read a little more about Makayla and her inspiration to donate to The House!

"My name is Makayla Chambers. I currently live in Boonville, NY, attending Adirondack High School. One evening, I was watching a television commercial selling socks, and one line stuck with me, "Socks are the #1 item needed in homeless shelters." Immediately, I was hooked.

The next day, I asked my Calculus teacher if she knew of any organizations in the area that would be willing to take sock donations, and she recommended The House of Good Shepherd. From there, I emailed my National Honor Society advisor, and she loved the idea and told me to proceed as chairman of the Sock Drive. I then contacted the House of Good Shepherd and set a date to drop off the items.

After, I announced the Sock Drive to my fellow National Honor Society members, giving them a start and end date for the drive. My advisor's room became the drop off-center, and any member who had the financial means to donate, did! I am so thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with The House of the Good Shepherd and for the opportunity to run the sock drive! I would deem it an overall success, and I hope the socks find a happy home!" -Makayla Chambers
